There are different kinds of languages in the world such as the language we talk with it, sign language, animal language, and body language. In a usual language, the alphabet conveys the message. Sign language uses a combination of hand gestures and sounds to create a communication instrument for the deaf. The animal language which is still ambiguous comprised of sounds, gestures, and even scents. Body language, however, is a special language to interpret human behaviors and decode gestures in talks, whether it is formal or informal.
Historically, Ray Birdwhistell, an anthropologist, coined “body language” term. He was studying how people communicated with each other with non-verbal signals. Later this field of study was divided into three main categories including kinesics, proxemics, and haptics. Kinesics studies body movements such as facial expressions or gestures. Proxemics is about the human distance from each other and human territories and finally, haptics, as the name tells, interprets touching actions.
Although body language has been a field of study for more than a century, it has an undoubted impact on daily ordinary communications. There are courses on body language where students learn how to successfully land a job, earn money and even find their beautiful partner! and all of these are possible with the miracle of body language. Some people reported after taking body language interpretation courses, it improved their lives.
Let’s introduce a few gestures in body language, their meaning, and what you should do if you see them. The first gesture is related to hands. It is a style of shaking hands with confidence that demonstrates power and influence. When shaking hands, If you do not see the palm of your friend, It means he or she is bossy and a little nasty. This person wants to show he is more powerful than you and has complete control over you.
“Steepled hands” is another gesture used to show self-confidence. It is also used when someone admonishes the others. If during a job interview, the applicant shows steepled hands it could be a negative sign to hiring manager and he might not consider you for the job.
The last one tells you if someone has fallen in love with you. In other words, this head movement is somehow a clear message indicating that a woman loves you and is ready to spend more time with you. “Tilting head” while talking especially when it is repeated several times means that the girl you recently dated might thinking about living with you.
Overall, body language is not only a science but also a social tool to know more people around you without talking to them which is made it absolutely interesting for many. So next time someone touched your shoulder and crossed her legs, make sure to figure it out otherwise you might lose a life.
